Based in Berlin, Di Grine Kuzine, which means “the greenhorn cousin” have toured throughout Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Slovenia, Czech Republic and Austria. The band with the unusual instrumentation of accordion, drums, tuba, trumpet, saxophone and voice has an unmistakeable sound: full of energy, danceable and compactly arranged. The result is very personal, with a heart-quickening freshness and sense of humour with which they have won themselves a loyal audience which spans all generations.

Funky Pukanky

Here's an utterly engaging music video that's a little bit Cabaret, a little bit klezmer and a whole lot of fun. It's the result of a competition to find a song that extolled the multicultural face of modern Berlin. Alexandra Dmitroff, a second generation Bulgarian who fronts the band wrote the song, and the reward was their very own video. With a little help from a girlfriend choreographer, they developed the visuals, but it's the charm of the song itself that carries it. The band's sound is a combination of Balkan, Jewish and Germanic influences. In case you are wondering 'Di Grine Kuzine' is a slang expression; it's what established Jews might call a newly arrived relative.

Review of Di Grine Kuzine	5	Hailing from the undivided metropolis of Berlin, Di Grine Kuzine takes the tools of the Balkan band and bends them in new directions, exploring klezmer and the other multicultural musics that blend in Germany's once-and-again capitol city. Their newest CD is named Funky (English) Pukanky (Bulgarian: popcorn); the liner notes explain the explosion of a corn kernel as the kind of transformation their music aims for: "Suddenly everything seems to happen on its own. And whether you're in Costa Rica, Spain, Germany, or Bulgaria, it's always the same. Funky Pukanky - long live that magic moment of transformation!" This upbeat, mischievious spirit pervades the music of Di Grine Kuzine, who play songs from Macedonia, Bulgaria, Sicily, Serbia, Germany, Romania, and beyond, both originals and reinterpretations. "Berlin" was written for a contest to best express the multicultural face of modern Berlin. Tuba player Steve Lukanky anchors the sound. Add the reeds of Max Hacker, the drums of Snorre Schwarz, the trumpet of Karel Komnatoff, and the accordion and voice of Anexandra Dimitroff, and you've got a winning combination.
